Beginning in 2007, Youku began syndicating movies and TV shows for its users and later in 2009, began creating its own original content. In 2014, Youku also launched a film division called Heyi Film in order to leverage big data to produce films to the tastes of the Chinese audience in the multi-screen age and improve film marketing and distribution. Currently, Youku Tudou is advancing its original content by partnering with premium production companies from around the world.

Youku Tudou has quickly become a premier destination for world-class advertising, as well as, partnering with hundreds of brand advertisers over the past several years, including household names like P&G, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Apple, Lenovo, Samsung, and China Mobile.

Youku Tudou was created from a merger of Youku Inc. and Tudou Inc. back in August of 2012. The company’s stock is publicly traded on the NYSE under the ticker symbol YOKU.

Founded in November 2005, Youku launched in beta in June 2006 and opened to the public in December 2006. A year later in December 2007, Youku was receiving more than 100 million video views per day. A pioneer in the area of user-generated content, Youku has since expanded and diversified its library to include a combination of licensed professional content, user-generated content and self-produced web video content for free, subscription-based, and on-demand viewing across devices. On December 8, 2010, Youku became the first Chinese internet video company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Officially launched in April 2005, Tudou -- originally Toodou -- was China's first video-sharing website with a focus on user-generated content. By the end of 2007, Tudou was receiving approximately 50 million unique visitors per day. In September 2008, Tudou debuted China's first HD video-sharing platform with the launch of Heidou; the same year, the company established the Tudou Video Festival for young independent video producers and artists, which has been held every year since. On August 17, 2011, Tudou listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
